As we enter 2025, we see so many places where challenges and potential solutions don’t have borders (geographical or by issue area). From biodiversity loss and climate change to infectious disease and information integrity, what happens in one part of the world affects others. Just as advances or challenges to one issue impact others. Democratic principles, such as freedom of expression, open and honest government, and protecting human rights, advance issues from clean water and Indigenous land rights to women’s health and safe work environments. Environmental health from forest health to air quality—alter everything, from food security and natural disaster prevention to chronic disease and economic equity. Similarly, public health—from health care access to the removal of toxins from communities—influences everything, from economic vitality to life expectancy. And just as innovations and solutions cross geographic borders, so do challenges.

At Metropolitan Group and our sister company Impacto Social Metropolitan Group (MG/ISMG), we are privileged to support and collaborate with leaders in the public, nonprofit, philanthropic, and private sectors who are working to address these global challenges. We are working with leaders and communities in over 20 countries, strengthening civic space and the people’s voice on issues that impact them, advancing responsive government, bolstering public health and well-being, accelerating biodiversity conservation, addressing climate impacts, countering misinformation, fighting corruption, standing for human rights, and fostering inclusive economies. We see the potential power and opportunity to increase social change by supporting connections at the intersections of issues and facilitating learning from different countries and cultures.

We are excited to share tools, models, learnings and stories from this work and to invite conversation and collaboration. We invite you to visit and access the resources on our Addressing Global Challenges page.

We look forward to learning, collaborating and working with you in 2025 and beyond to address global challenges.

As Metropolitan Group (MG/ISMG) begins our 36th year, we are more committed than ever to supporting and working in partnership with change agents to respond to truly global challenges, and to directly impact and drive needed changes on issues that require collective action and significant shifts in norms and public will.

Across sectors and across geographies the need to create proactive narratives, social expectations, and systemic changes that center fairness, freedom, equity, justice, and peace is profound. We all need solutions we can work toward while we also work to effectively counter rising authoritarianism, hyperpolarization, the use of fear and othering, and attacks on information integrity. We see this combined work of building up just solutions while robustly pushing back on injustice in the work of our clients and the communities they serve every day.

We see the power of voice and its ability to activate change in the work of advocates, civil society organizations, dedicated public servants, artists, and advocates.

This 35th annual letter to stakeholders shares updates on our team and stories of our clients’ work and impact. As we begin our 36th year of social impact work, we are focused and committed to the shared mission of advancing public health, environmental sustainability, and social justice. We are excited to collaborate with you on this journey.

Check out Kayla Beard‘s first MG byline published on Medium here. In this piece she explores topics such as environmental justice, consent-based siting and the Biden Administration.

“Environmental justice has become a buzzword and a shimmering pearl at the heart of the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to mitigating climate change. My introduction to environmental justice (EJ) began when I started working at Metropolitan Group. Though my passion for the environment was ignited more than a decade ago, I wasn’t aware that there was a term to describe the necessary work of demanding equity for communities that have been disproportionately impacted by environmental toxicity and the consequences of industrial growth and governmental negligence. I’ve since learned that for more than 40 years, a dedicated group of advocates has been building a movement that has finally gained federal support from the current administration.”

Dear Friends and Stakeholders,

As we begin our 35th year, we are inspired by the innovative, passionate and impactful work of change agents working to make structural improvements to advance a more just and sustainable world. We have seen the resilience and the impact of people standing for democratic values, doing the hard work of power building and movement building, and championing freedom and human rights for people in Mexico, the United States and around the world. We have supported community leaders, coalitions and organizations invested in authentic engagement, to shift the dynamics of who is seen and centered, whose voices are amplified, and who has agency to drive change.

MG/ISMG is privileged to work with change agents and the communities they serve. This year, we partnered with our clients to: advance just solutions to climate change, strengthen democracy, counter structural racism, address gender-based violence, advocate for families of the disappeared, center environmental justice, accelerate biodiversity conservation, increase health equity and build currency for equitable well-being, support organizational transformation based on equity and inclusion, and so much more.

2022 was also a time for continued work on strengthening our own organizational culture and capacity. Our capacity and resources have increased to meet the needs of our clients, and in 2022 we added 15 incredible new MG/ISMGers to our team—many of whom we met in person for the first time at our staff retreat at The Public Will Building.

This 34th annual letter to stakeholders shares updates on our team, thought leadership and stories of our clients’ work and impact. As we embark on our 35th year, we are deeply committed to advancing the shared imperatives of public health, environmental sustainability and social justice—we are excited to collaborate with you in this work. On behalf of the entire MG/ISMG team, we look forward to partnering with you to advance collective impact, creativity and the power of voice.

Paul Tigan leads from a place of curiosity, drawing on his natural resource management, public policy, and strategic communication experience as he works with clients and in his community. His growth as a person, colleague and leader is never over!

He plays an active role as a resident advocate in the City of Salem, Oregon. He has served on the City of Salem’s Citizen Budget Committee for five years. He serves as the Land Use Chair for the Grant Neighborhood Association, supporting and working with others to create awesome projects that bring communities together.

Paul and his family live in Salem, OR and are in a long-term relationship with a cottage north of downtown. He is usually learning to play a new musical instrument of some kind–maybe even trying to build them–but never quite mastering them. He plays on a recreational ice hockey team, loves to be outdoors, and values the time he spends with his family, friends, and neighbors.

In April 2022, we hosted a convening on “Harnessing Infrastructure to Advance Racial Equity and Climate Justice.” The discussion was poignant, hopeful and included Jacqui PattersonEzra MilchmanVernice Miller-Travis and Jennifer Messenger. Our expert panel shared examples of so-called “common good” infrastructure investments that brought benefits to white communities and generational trauma and disenfranchisement to Black, Brown, Indigenous, immigrant and low wealth communities. At the same time, our panelists reflected on the promise and potential of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to correct historic wrongs and create an enduring set of conditions that meaningfully advance racial equity and justice.

The discussion was informed by the participation of about 85 thought leaders spanning disciplines, sectors and organizations. If you would like to view the full conversation, click here or watch the video below. We have also recapped highlights from our panelists in this Medium blog—we encourage your comments and shares.

If, after reviewing the above links, you have questions or reflections related to infrastructure and its connection to environmental justice, climate or health equity, we’d be happy to set up some time to continue the conversation. We welcome the opportunity to shape ideas together.

2021 was a year of severe challenges to public health, the environment, racial justice and systems based upon democratic values. It was also a year that demonstrated the power of people and communities who demanded accountability, made incredible scientific advances, and created meaningful practice and policy changes. More than ever, the past year made clear connections between public health, climate equity and social change. 2021 unequivocally demonstrated the importance of change agents using their power of voice to catalyze movements and inspire community action.

We are privileged to work with these change agents and the communities they serve. From global migration, vaccine access, biodiversity conservation, environmental racism, gender violence, judicial reform and protecting civil society organizations to many other issues, our team has been honored to partner in the work of advancing a more just and sustainable world. In addition, this year has been a time of growth and learning for our staff. We have continued to invest in and focus on our justice, equity, diversity and inclusion journey, and we have grown our team to meet the needs of our clients by adding 18 incredible new Metropolitan Group/Impacto Social Metropolitan Group (MG/ISMG) staff.

In this 33rd annual letter to stakeholders, we share updates, resources and stories of our clients’ work. As we begin our 34th year, we are deeply committed to advancing the shared imperatives of public health, environmental sustainability and social justice—and we are excited to collaborate with you in this work. On behalf of all of us at MG/ISMG, we wish you a year of impact and purpose.

In commitment and community,

—The MG/ISMG team
