The installation “Miradora” is the product of the work of the cultural program Atrio de San Francisco of the Fundación del Centro Histórico in collaboration with organizations and collectives that address issues of women’s rights and their diversities: Juventudes Trans México, EQUIS Justicia para las Mujeres, ILSB, Intersecta, GIRE, Balance A.C., Existimos, QuereTrans, Fondo Semillas, Hola, Amigue, Transformar Trascender, IOIO Mexico, Asociación por las infancias transgénero, Escucharnos Decir, Impulso Trans, Las Indecidibles, Casa de las Muñecas Tiresias, Casa Hogar Paola Buenrostro, Más Sueños and Centro de Apoyo a las Identidades Trans A.C. (CAIT). We thank the women who have generously shared their knowledge and experiences in their different struggles.

“Rexistir” was a space we created inspired by the slogan “I exist because I resist,” which reminds us of the strength and resilience—as well as the joy and pride in the face of adversity—that often characterizes people and communities in activism, movements and social organizations. This event sought to honor those who contribute, everyday, to building a more just and inclusive society in Mexico. We shared reflections and tools from a diverse range of experts.

During the event the community shared art and creativity, spaces for conversation, exchange of knowledge, as well as great food and lively music! Our attendees went home with three things:

1. More skills and strategies that they could apply and adapt to their own campaigns.
2. More resilient tools that they could incorporate into workshops for social change.
3. A larger network of allies, partners, collaborators. It has been especially important for our communities to reconnect after such a long time of working remotely due to COVID-19.

In Mexico, violence against cis and trans women is rising and hate speech continues to weaken collective action toward gender equity. With Equis Justicia and la Red Nacional de Juventudes Trans, ISMG created an intersectional feminist campaign called Sin Miedo A Ser and elevated the voices of those experiencing social and institutional discrimination. In partnership with 22 nonprofits and civil society organizations, we told diverse stories that convey hope, strength and complexity with a call for everyone to join together, overcome fear, move towards equity and realize a world of true gender equality.
